happy fourth of july

after a long day of PBS and blogging, we left the house around 7:30 to go get picnic food and see the bats fly out from underneath congress bridge before the fireworks. (apparently every night around 8:30 all the bats who have been sleeping underneath the bridge all night fly out. once shad got shat on.) we got some tasty dinner - baguette, hummus, brie, carrots, pita chips, wine, and chex mix for me for later because i am obsessed with it - and settled down on the grass next to the river to wait.

we basically watched the sunset and watched this one family move locations about 5 annoying times, and the fireworks were taking their sweet time. a bunch of troublemakers around town were setting off their own fireworks, which kept tricking me and all the little kids into thinking the real ones were starting. finally they did, but in a slightly different location from where we thought, leading me to fall down a hill in an attempt to see them. i have fallen down now on this trip about 40 times, but this is the only time i got scratched up while doing so.
